Brown Sugar Fried Apples are made easily with crisp apples, rich butter, cinnamon and brown sugar! These delectable fried apples are amazing served alongside dinner as a side dish or for dessert with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream.

This fried apples recipe with brown sugar is a great dish to serve all year long, for any occasion, even the pickiest of eaters will love these. Making these sweet fried apples is so simple too, with minimal ingredients you will have a sensational dish made in 15 minutes.

FRIED APPLES WITH BROWN SUGAR

Easy fried apples are made with basic ingredients, just like they serve at Cracker Barrel! Sweet apples recipe is great served with pork chops or alongside roasted chicken. You can even drizzle them with caramel and serve with Pralines & Cream Ice Cream. I also love them with oatmeal or on top of warm buttermilk biscuits for breakfast. Any way you eat them, sautéed apples are always a great idea!

INGREDIENTS FOR BROWN SUGAR FRIED APPLES

Tangy Apples: You need 5 large Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced, this will produce about 6 cups. You are welcome to use a different type of tart apple, my other favorites are Honey Crisp apples, Pink Lady or Fuji. Try to use a firm apple and avoid softer apples like Red Delicious, the softer apples don’t have a great texture after being fried.

Lemon: Use 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, fresh is preferred, but you can use a store-bought option.

Butter: We use ½ cup salted butter (although you can use unsalted butter if you prefer)

Brown Sugar: Measure out ½ cup light brown sugar for this recipe. I’m always a fan of using what you have on hand too! Although do try to use brown sugar as opposed to white sugar as it adds delicious flavor.

Cinnamon: Add in 1 ½ teaspoons of ground cinnamon for an amazing warm spiced flavor.

Cornstarch or Flour: You will need 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour or cornstarch, this acts as a thickening agent for the sticky glaze that is created when heating apples.

WHEN ARE APPLES IN SEASON?

Apples are a Fall crop, so plan on the best apples being ripe in late August or early September through early November. Of course, it depends on where you live and the climate in your area. I love making apple recipes in October, when I get an abundance of apples from a local orchard.

HOW LONG UNTIL FRIED APPLES SOFTEN?

The time it takes to fry the apples will vary depending on how large the apple slices are and what variety of apples you’re using. Generally they’ll be done in 10-15 minutes. Using a lid does quicken the process a bit, especially if you’re cooking a large batch of apples. I’ve found Honeycrisp apples take the longest to cook. Cutting apples smaller does help. Traditional apple cutters cut apples into 8 thick wedges. I prefer this 16-slice apple cutter personally.

WHAT PAN IS BEST FOR FRIED APPLES?

I like to use a cast iron skillet to make fried apples on the stove. It retains heat well which means the apples cook evenly. A regular black cast iron skillet will sear the apples more, resulting in darker brown edges that have a wonderful rich, buttery taste. Enameled cast iron pans heat more evenly and will not leave brown edges. I like both! The pan I use just depends on how large a batch I’m doing. You can also use stainless steel or a ceramic large skillet. Just make sure the pan has a lid as it does make the process faster.

WARM SPICES FOR CINNAMON APPLES

You can fry apples in butter and not add anything else, but I love adding spices like cinnamon and a dash of nutmeg. The flavors blend well together and taste so good! Using apple pie spice is also a good option. I also like the sweet syrup the spices create. Drizzle it on top of the apples just before serving to add a lovely flavor. Feel free to adjust the amount of spices as you’d like, but don’t go overboard so that the delicious flavor from the luscious apples shines through!

HOW TO USE FRIED APPLES?

Skillet fried cinnamon apples can also be used in a variety of ways. They are the perfect filling for traditional apple pie or hand pies. You can cook them further to yield fresh apple sauce. You can use them as topping at breakfast on pancakes, waffles or oatmeal. Serve them alongside a buttery pound cake drizzled with a sticky caramel sauce. They make an amazing dessert served over vanilla bean ice cream or warm homemade custard. Or serve them as a simple side dish at any meal.

HOW TO FRY CINNAMON APPLES

PREP

Begin by peeling, core, and slice the apples. Then, place the sliced apples into a medium bowl and squeeze a bit of the lemon juice over the apple slices to prevent them from browning.
